We are a nationally accredited health department!

January 31, 2025

South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) was awarded five-year accreditation status through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) on March 17, 2020.

PHAB was created to serve as the national public health accrediting body and is funded in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  The development of national public health accreditation has involved, and is supported by, public health leaders and practitioners from the national, state, local, Tribal, and territorial levels.

Why You Should Care

As a nationally-accredited health department, SHDHD meets the highest standards expected from a health department in the United States.

According to PHAB:

"This milestone accomplishment is official recognition that SHDHD meets the rigorous, multi-faceted, peer reviewed assessment process and standards of PHAB, which works to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and transforming the quality and performance of governmental public health agencies in the U.S. and abroad."

Accreditation is an investment that ensures that SHDHD is doing all that it can to improve the quality of life of the people in our District. Though accreditation status lasts for five years, health departments demonstrate ongoing accountability through annual reporting to PHAB as well as through the reaccreditation process. This ensures that accredited health departments continue to evolve, improve, and advance their public health practice on an on-going basis.

Reaccreditation in 2025!

SHDHD is up for reaccreditation in 2025. Our application will be submitted this year for review. We'll tell you the good news when we hear it.
