About Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Untreated they can cause serious health problems in both women and men including infertility, ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb) and a painful illness in men. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea can be cured with the right medication.

How it spreads

Anyone who has had vaginal, anal, or oral sex without a condom with an infected person can get chlamydia and/or gonorrhea. A pregnant woman with chlamydia can give the infection to her baby during childbirth.

Signs and symptoms

Often times chlamydia and gonorrhea have no symptoms, but they can cause serious health problems, even without symptoms. If symptoms occur, they may not appear until several weeks after having sex with an infected partner.

Women may:

     · Feel burning or pain when they urinate.

     · Urinate more often.

     · See a discharge from the vagina.

     · Have cramps in the lower belly or bleed between periods.

     · Painful bowl movements.

     · Anal itching.

Men may:

     · Feel burning when they urinate.

     · Urinate more often.

     · See a white drip from the penis.

     · Have swollen, sore testicles.

     · Painful bowl movements.

     · Anal itching.

Signs and symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea can come and go away, so it’s important to get checked even if the signs go away on their own.

Not all medical checkups include STI testing, so don't assume that you've been tested unless you discuss it with your provider. If your provider does not discuss sex or STI testing with you, bring it up.
